Shawn Richards, owner of Colorado Smokehouse Barbecue and Catering, is holding a grand opening from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday at his restaurant which is located at 6679 Camden Blvd. (north of Wal-Mart and Pikes Peak National Bank) in Fountain.
The grand opening celebration will include food specials all day, a rib-eating contest (hopefully between a soldier and a cadet) and a live remote by 95.1 Cat Country, according to Richards who opened the restaurant about a month ago. The live remote will include free giveaways.
Richards, who comes from Kansas City, and his friend, Larry Bullard, who comes from Texas (two places known for great bar-be-cue,) have done catering for two years but have never had a permanent location from which to distribute their food. They previously worked out of a commissary and then took the food to wherever they were catering.
“This is great, we finally have a place to call home” Richards said. “When we cater, people constantly ask us where we ‘re located and in the past we had to tell them we didn’t have a permanent location and now we can tell them we are somewhere, and can give them a physical address where they can come see us.”
The restaurant features Texas Style Brisket, Southern Pulled Pork, Memphis and Kansas City Style Ribs, Burnt Ends, and Southern Sweet Tea. Richards also offers a variety of homemade sauces including Kansas City, Georgia Mustard, Carolina Vinegar and his own Special Chipotle sauce.
“Our customers love our homemade pinto beans, potato salad and coleslaw,” Bullard said.
Richards said that all the meat is smoked over Mesquite wood which gives a touch of added flavor to the food served at the restaurant.
We are committed to bringing you the best barbecue you’ve had. Our ‘Low-n-Slow’ method of smoking provides you with the tenderest meat you can get,” he said. “Our Mesquite smoke will give you a flavor that will make your mouth water just thinking about it.”
Customers can either dine inside or outside or pick up their to-go order at the drive-thru window. The restaurant also offers military, fire and police discounts.
Even though they have a permanent location, Richards and Bullard continue to do catering.
“We can cater your office party, wedding reception, etc,” Richards said. “We can cater to any group, large or small.”
The restaurant is open Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sun. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The phone number is 651-1453.

“Saturday is the perfect opportunity to come see what we’re all about,” Richards said. “Once you try our Mesquite bar-be-cue and homemade sauces and sides you’ll be back.”
